Beauty

I was very disappointed in this book. Pretty much the only dialogue coming from "Beauty" was talking about how she is the ugliest of her sisters and that she is so plain. Girl, you're gorgeous, get over it. On another note, there hardly was any dialogue in this book which was just strange. I'm not quite sure why this book is rated so well by other goodreads members.
adventurous emotional funny hopeful reflective tense fast-paced

Not much of a conflict, and there wasn’t much to the Beast’s character. Strongest part of the book is everything before Beauty goes to the enchanted castle.
I love the way Robin McKinley writes, but BOY she sure does love to pair her female characters up with old men, huh?

Nothing at all like nostalgia. I still have parts of this off by heart.

The first half was a bit confusing and felt more like a rough draft but the second half felt more polished and I really liked the charter of Beast. I Hope to read it again.

The narration was wonderful, it really got me invested in the story. I enjoyed most of the story, but I have to say I am no longer a fan of the Beast turning into a handsome young man. Even worse, in this version, Beauty (whose name is rather a family joke based on something she said as a child)
also undergoes a transformation a the end. Why? The beast loved her as she was, but I guess now he's the Hot Guy again she has to have a Glow Up as well. It soured at lot of my enjoyment of the book as a whole.
The narration was really good though.
hopeful mysterious medium-paced

too slow, not enough content in the actual story.
was very disappointed as this book had so many good reviews, was definitely expecting much more from it.

A charming retelling with a very lackluster ending - 4 stars for the first 85% of the book, 2 stars for the last 15%.

This was lovely! I really enjoyed McKinley’s prose and characterization. I think perhaps if I’d read this physically it would have felt too slow for me, but the audio experience was great. I loved all the accents and the narrators expressiveness. The story felt whimsical and cozy, and I found myself smiling ear to ear reading it. This is very different from the more spicy modern retellings of this story, which was refreshing to me.

The beast isn’t introduced until about 40% into the story, and so if you’re wanting a strictly romance story you may be disappointed. I’d love to read her other non romance books, because to me the romance was the least important part of the story. I deducted a star because I wasn’t very invested in the romance at all, I was more invested in beauty as a person, her family, and their journey together. Although beast was the ultimate gentleman, which I loved, I just really enjoyed their friendship. There wasn’t much built up romantically in my opinion.

Also, I found the ending to be a tad bit rushed. I wish there was an extra 20 pages or so to really bask in the moment.

But I really enjoyed this and I’m so glad I was able to grab the audiobook. I look forward to reading more from this author!
