from MY DREAMS, MY WORKS, MUST WAIT TILL AFTER HELLI hold my honey and I store my bread
In little jars and cabinets of my will.
I label clearly, and each latch and lid
I bid, Be firm till I return from hell.
I am very hungry. I am incomplete.
And none can tell when I may dine again.
No man can give me any word but Wait,
The puny light. I keep eyes pointed in;
Hoping that, when the devil days of my hurt
Drag out to their last dregs and I resume
On such legs as are left me, in such heart
As I can manage, remember to go home,
My taste will not have turned insensitive
To honey and bread old purity could love.

I felt honored to have read this collection, something that marks true wonder for me. Let me learn.
The introduction is well written and necessary for someone walking into the room with Ms. Brooks for the first time.

See my notes while reading, but suffice to say I loved this. I will eventually go back and note my favorite poems from the collection but I basically highlighted every other poem in this book. Her writing is so imminently quotable, so visceral, so rhythmic, that I tore through this like it was a novel. I want to read some of her longer works for sure, I’m so glad I picked this up, I loved it so much.

Felt like I needed to read actual books by her versus selections to get impact.
