At their best, Mick Herron's’ Slough House novels are wonderfully written with great observations about human nature, evocative descriptions of place, and great satire (with lots of street smart details) about the workings of government organizations. At worst, they try to persuade us that relentless generic world-weariness is the same as wisdom and that Jackson Lamb’s tiny manifestations of humanity toward his “losers” near the end of each novel make his boorishness a sign of complexity. I also find the relentless swearing gratuitous and unrealistic. Know LeCarre is from a different era, but how is it this actual author/spy’s characters manage to get through a couple of pages without saying f*ck and Herron’s don’t? Oh—and from the review warning list: plentiful examples of misogny, violence, dementia, bullying, gun violence, toxic relationships and sexism. That said, I’ll probably continue with the series because it IS well-written, but maybe alternating with more uplifting books so I don’t start doing unintentional Jackson Lamb cosplay.
