Once a doctor's daughter in Greece, now Amara is a slave in Pompeii's brothel. Yet as oppressed as she is, there's always the chance she can reverse her fortunes - if she's bold enough to create the chance.

I've been to Pompeii, peered up at the preserved carvings in the town brothel, walked the same streets as the characters separated by only the gulf of several thousand years. It's a heady thought.

Harper brings the wretched world of Amara's Pompeii alive vividly, showing both the degradation she suffers and the happiness she snatches at. The plot is slow-moving, but the everyday moments of Amara's life are compelling. I'm definitely interested in continuing the series to see how far she'll manage to rise - and to find out if she'll be able to save her friends.

I'm so glad this is a trilogy! I would be so sad to leave Amara and Pompeii and even that rat bastard Felix, a man so loathsome and yet you find yourself rooting for him on occasion. Fair warning, though, there is a lot to be triggered by in this story. TW's for slavery, rape, violence, narcissism, mental abuse, suicide, kidnapping, assault, and consistently explicit language. I'm sure there are more that I have forgotten.

The characters have so much dimension that sometimes you love them and sometimes you hate them. And the place making is chef's kiss. You get such a clear picture of Pompeii, yet the author doesn't overdo it with description. I could see the houses, streets, bars, theatre, brothel, clothing - everything - so clearly that they will live in my mind like memories of a place visited in real life.
