This book was so beautifully written. I enjoyed the story, but for some reason I didn’t feel the same connection as I did with the first book. I didn’t believe the love story 90% of the way through, and while Pestilence had me feeling emotionally overwhelmed throughout the entire book this one had me feeling a bit underwhelmed.

Sure I had a few moments in the book that my emotions would break out, but overall I just felt there was a little chemistry missing between the main characters. I still really loved the story, and can’t wait to see what happens next.

War was weird. They made his character rather brutish which is the opposite of what it takes to do what war does. You need a lot of knowledge and wisdom to be victorious in fights and the tactics and strategy War executed was rather good. Not to mention the system he created within the camp. Albeit it was degrading and very dog-eat-dog, you need to carry a lot of influence and have a somewhat level head for that many people to follow you. Sure it can be out of fear, but not all leadership is just.

Onto the romance portion. It’s a no for me, I’m not into a man who refers to me as woman. And before someone humorously quips me with “at least she’s recognized as a woman”, which yeah I’m really happy humanity came that far for that one, I have to say War isn’t for me. However we stan a man who instantly knows that she’s the one. Plus I lowkey love how the moment he found her and they spoke to one another he just started calling her wife. I lowkey found that cute.

My only love for War is that his duty in the world is something he has to do and not because he wants to do it. He sees the very sickness in humankind and just does what he feels his god told him to do because it’s his job. It’s like there’s a certain honor that befalls on him and he has this little bit of code instilled in him that allows him to do the stuff he has to do with grace.

Anyway, to read or not to read? My answer - yes, read this. It helps you understand why the four horseman are the way they are and how they’re so-called detrimental to the biblical apocalypse.

A rare occasion in which the 2nd is actually better than the first
