Don’t let the length of the book stop you. The storytelling is vivid. The interviews are fresh - amazing since this happened 40 years ago and we all think we know everything about MLK.

I heard an interview with the author, Eig, where he said he rushed to speak to the people as much as he could before they passed. Many passed before he could send them final copies of the book.

Eig does a brilliant job of humanizing King in order to make his contributions to American society all the more impressive. King was unfaithful to his wife and struggled with guilt because of this and the heavy responsibilities he took on within the civil rights movement. He was hounded by the FBI and white supremacists. Yet, time and again, when needed, he stepped up and risked his life through stirring words and actions. He hadn't wanted the life of a founding father or a martyr, but it found him. He wasn't a great organizer but became a leader because of his natural gifts and commitment to his ideals. King routinely held space for people he disagreed with who were committed to the same goals. Even in a time of darkness and retreat, King's vision remains. I would have appreciated a little more synthesis on King's legacy after his death--where is the civil rights movement today and what are the lessons we can take away from King's brief life?
