One of the most readable biographies I've ever read. Much new information from public records released on the ridiculous amounts of money/effort the US gov't and FBI/Hoover spent trying to turn public opinion against King and prevent him from becoming a "black messiah".

If you want to learn about MLK as a person and not just a figure in history books, then you have to read this. I learned so much from reading this and I feel like it will be a book I come back to again and again to glean even more with subsequent reads.

I thought Eig did a great job relating the FBI's strange, racist approach to Dr. King. I was surprised by his melancholy and depression, but I understand the power of its portrayal of even such a great man. I also remember that no person is completely pure in their actions. Seeing the flawed side of Dr. King is a reminder that we have our places of struggle.

Overall I was very happy I read this and I learned a lot. I am not sure if it was presented as well as it could have been. It did a better job with specifically understanding the man, which is great, but I was left wanting more intricate explanations and analysis of the times.
