I felt like I was reading a 1950s collection of pulp science fiction book. Seeing as how I've barely read any pulp fiction books from the 50s, I think its very telling where this book gets its inspiration from. But through all of these short stories, there's a very clear thread that runs through all of them, which is the story of Atticus and his family. Their journeys through 1950s America mixed with the Lovecraftian horrors that await them, there's a certain horrified pleasure that the reader feels when experiencing their tribulations.

What makes this book extra special is that it's much more than it lets on. In many respects, science fiction is just a way to comment on very human frailties and systems in a psuedo-scientific environment. Mix that with Jim Crow, white supremecy, and occult magic, and what you get is a blend of ghoulishness and mundane terror all clad in a simple fight for power. Even more frightening is just how current and powerfully relatable a lof what happens in this book is without having to beat you over the head with its themes and symbols. Take from it what you will, this book dives deep with its perspective on race in America.

Not much to say. This was incredibly thorough and well-written. I haven't read any other biographies of MLK, but this reads like the definitive edition. There is a lot of focus on his childhood, providing background I didn't necessarily know and a lot of detail and insight into his mindset and wellbeing. I also enjoyed the focus on Coretta and her influence on his life. Fairly objective, this provides the facts and setting for his life, rise, public struggle, and abrupt death. There is also an interview at the end that was enlightening as to how this book differs from other biographies because of the sources that Eig had access to.

Well researched biography of MLK that includes declassified FBI files.  The author tries to present the entire person of MLK.  He was a great leader for civil rights but he also had many flaws.  Highly recommend.
