I learned so much about MLK and the Civil Rights Movement in this book. One of Eig's primary aims was to humanize MLK, to show us the person who bit his nails and cheated on his wife and pushed himself to exhaustion. I'd known that the FBI wiretapped MLK for years; this book revealed to me the extent of that surveillance, which Hoover executed, but Robert Kennedy and LBJ permitted. I also appreciated learning more about Coretta Scott, an activist in her own right who had to temper her own ambition in many ways to support MLK. MLK expected Coretta to be a mother first and foremost. Before Coretta, MLK had been engaged to a white woman.
Eig argues that MLK did not merely become more radical over time into his late 30s. He just didn't think he could share his more radical ideas in his early advocacy. Speaking out against the Vietnam War cost him much support. This coming from a man whose childhood was very middle class. Eig also goes into detail about how all of the marches and boycotts were developed and executed, making ML's success seem not inevitable but something always needing to be renewed, especially when he focused on the North.

This is an extremely well done audio book. The narration is excellent.
The book is engrossing. Full of primary sources, quotes, and context. It does not glorify King in an exaggerated way. It is honest, fair, and complete. There is little to no conjecture or opinion. Extremely well done.

I really appreciate this book. I have much more respect to Reverend Dr. King. It’s quite infuriating learning all the violence that took place during the Civil Rights Movement. Simultaneously, I feel inspired by the dedication, strength and commitment of all the Civil Rights Activists at the time. This book is well-researched and well-narrated and well-written. It’s a must read for everyone!

Such an interesting person. This was a clear, well-written and engaging biography of MLK, but I struggled a bit with Eig's writing style/perspective. I like feeling like I'm in the mind of whoever's biography I'm reading and I felt very removed from MLK's internal landscape.
I did cry during the I Have a Dream chapter and the Epilogue though!

I learned a lot about the myth, the legend, the real Martin Luther King Jr. I can now speak with much more awareness of who he was.
