One of my favorite books of the year. “He died that night. He was only 39-years-old.” This line struck me, because I think about all of the immaculate moments and history that came out of that short-lived, impactful life of historical significance. Eig mentions at the end, but MLK’s life was about fighting injustice. This especially strikes a cord now, because MLK did not need to do any of this. Friends even told him to not undergo these tasks, and yet he did so anyway. He was determined and persevered. Recently, I went to Birmingham and walked the Civil Rights trail and saw the Civil Rights Institute and 16th Street Baptist Church. Steeped in this history, it was important for me to read this book at this time. The world is in a constant state of turmoil, and if we only exhibited the same love, compassion and drive for peace as Dr. King, we might finally reach our goal of ultimate human kindness and love for one another.

Thorough, nuanced and reflective - a very illuminating biography.

the definitive biography. i am blown away. eig's epilogue is spot on in that so much of my understanding of king and his work was the sanitized, polished version that the powers that be want us to learn. he was an imperfect man with faults, and eig's ability to highlight them, makes his work all the more critical and his murder all the more tragic.
