I had been wanting to read this book for a while now, but this wasn't quite what I expected.  Thought this would have explored multiple differing writing styles, but even though the stories change, the style remains. An energy-consuming read and a disappointment. Bonus points for a creative, experimental premise. All in all, I liked the original idea (but not the execution), the mystery and the concept of the Reader. Disliked the sexism and overall dullness.

There are about a thousand or more places where the book just completely shocked me. Calvino is quite simply an expert at constructing incredibly complex explorations of metaphysics and fiction. The book also manages to be quite funny and engaging on a narrative level, very impressive given the high-minded material.
