As Nathan put it so well in our discussion of Calvino's intellectual and impish romp about the joys of reading, "It's basically a post-modern takedown of postmodernism." One can't help but be charmed by the literary game Calvino is playing here. His balance of storytelling, structure and ideas is masterful. If its scattered plot lines deny the reader a strong emotional bond with the book, its playful dissection of why we read and the elation that comes with it is irresistible.

an amazing thing to read and a beautiful tribute to books and reading

I have to say, I enjoyed this at the very beginning, but just found myself getting increasingly irritated by Calvino’s pontificating.

He raises some interesting questions about the agency of the reader, but this slowly devolved into a nightmare read that I had to force myself to finish.
