Exciting Times by Naoise Dolan

I can see why this has been compared to Sally Rooney, as they do broadly cover similar emotional territories - the complicated nature of modern relationships, sex, politics and class - but Dolan is not a Rooney clone. Exciting Times looks even more into the ambigous spaces present in all these subjects, and Ava is a cooler (in tone), dryer narrator, who tends toward over-thinking & over-analysing (but often in an entertaining way).
Won't be everybody's cup of tea but I really enjoyed it regardless.

Ainda que continue a não achar grande piada à falta de história, dentro da história, nem a perceber o “hype” em torno deste tipo de literatura, do que tenho lido das “novas” autoras irlandesas, este livro está uns furos acima. Para além das divagações existenciais típicas destas autoras (e da irritante falta de auto-estima da protagonista) há a preocupação de discorrer sobre determinados temas interessantes - colonialismo, classes, sexualidade, entre outros mais esbatidos.
O género, continua a não me convencer.
Lê-se, se não houver melhor.
