It manages to be a page-turner without annoying suspense.

It's very slow and there's no reason for me to keep reading. No pull.

I started with this one and I genuinely enjoyed it, about to the point where
Kip's family turns up at the capitol.
At that point, the length and the episodic feel of the chapters started to wear on me. It feels like this story was written as a serial, and when published in novel form wasn't edited down to facilitate its core themes.

By the end it started to feel more like the author was trying to use Kip to tell a story that wasn't hers to tell.

Too slow, too much of a sausage fest. The best part was the emperor - he was a fascinating character. I liked the relationship between him and Kip slowly opening up, but I couldn't keep the momentum going.

Probably my favorite book of the year.
This starts slow and confusing, but it's worth it to keep it.

This is the best book I have ever read. I feel nourished and whole, having been cared for across nearly 1300 pages.
