Real Murders

Charlaine Harris

I tend to forget that I like Charlaine Harris, at least for the first few books in a series. This had an engaging protagonist and a slightly knotty mystery. I will read some more. Interesting to read a story from 30 years ago - no cell, no internet...

I'm borderline OCD, therefore not finishing books is rare for me. My mind boggles at the fact that I have been driven to dnf two books IN A ROW. IN TWO DAYS.
Aurora ticked me off right off the bat. She glimses a stanger and in 1.5 seconds believes she knows the person better than they know themselves. She makes these ridiculous and incredibly mean and rude assumptions about people she just meet. I gave up before she even started investigating the murder.

Cute and quick. Actually hadn't figured out who dun it before the end!

Extremely cheesy. Hastily added romances that have nothing to do with the story and are extremely awkward.

Series: Aurora Teagarden Book 1

Rating: B

TBH the only reason I started reading this series was because of the Hallmark Mystery Channel movies. You can tell the age of the stories based on lack of technology which was only a slight deterrent. This too was an audible purchase and a quick 6 hour listen.
I look forward to more in depth character development in the next stories. I feel like the audience barely caught a glimpse of these characters and they were a bit 1 dimensional. Hopefully they continue to develop into more interesting well rounded characters.

I notice Harris has begun to write about these characters again which I hope is a positive move.

To describe this in one sentence, I would say: Fast paced story with a smidge of romance.

Gotta love how Aurora didn't lose her night sleep and didn't even try to choose between two guys. Those two were just there for support. You know - a kiss here & there, helping out with exploring while investigating a crime, good for conversation while exchanging theories of the murders and motives.

Since it was fast paced read (for only one evening for sure,) it felt more like a novella to me and I didn't even have a time to start guessing who were the killer (or killers) = trying (not) to spoil (in my own sort of way), so I can't say it was predictable.

I wouldn't read this for a second time, but for that one time reading experience (without actual expectations,) I did enjoy it.

Off to the next one.

I’ve seen the movie made from that book but I must say that the book is way better. In this first installment, Aurora is facing her first murder investigation and has a close brush with death.
