A beautiful collection/memoir by Crystal Wilkinson with stark, well-placed illustrations by Ron Davis. These brief pieces will punch you in the heart.

Loved this entire collection…it felt like home, and not necessarily a literal place, but all the characteristics that make “home…” If felt familiar.
I went through so many emotions reading this, and so much of it was nostalgic of my own upbringing…of a childhood I had not thought of in awhile. It made me think of my grannie, who has now passed on, sitting on the patio as a young girl excited to snap peas with her and her and her old lady friends…This collection evoked so many memories I had not thought of in so long. I felt like I could actually smell the spices and the aroma from freshly cooked food.
Warm beautiful words…some sadness. Many of the poems, I felt I had to sit with for a little bit…really allow it to digest before moving on. I’m sure I will read again.
Excited to read more of her work.

This collection serves as a beautiful love letter to Wilkinson's rural roots. As always, she writes beautifully, simply, and with so much soul. My favorite, "Praise Song for the Kitchen Ghosts" weaves a beautiful story about the cooks in her life, her past, and her ancestry. A lyrical ode to food from family kitchens.

I loved this collection. It is the perfect companion to Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghosts also by Crystal Wilkinson.
