I always end up liking these even more than I expected to. Aguirre is on my to-buy list.

Yes, it's a book with a split personality. For the first two thirds there are torturous adventures, ranging from actual torture to peeing in a bucket on an overcrowded, smelly spaceship. Then comes the HEA including slinky backless dresses, scented sheets and wealth beyond most people's dreams.

What this reminded me of was real life. Well, on steroids. Long ago I was a broke young adult, living a scrappy and scruffy life, including rats, muggers and not always enough grocery money. And now I'm a 50-something early retiree sleeping on luxurious sheets, with a velvet headboard and silk drapes.

Life, over time, has a split personality. Nothing stays the same. I can see how the more abrupt change in this book would be jarring and not welcome for readers who enjoyed the corpse-strewn 'adventure' of the past two volumes. I myself preferred the nice, long HEA ending by far and was happy to get there.

I'm not sure what I expected from this part, and the start felt a bit rocky, but the middle section was well-written - possibly the best part of the trilogy. I didn't anticipate the ending at all, although it felt rather satisfying. Overall, another amiable read, and the focus on a smaller number of characters helped flesh them out to a much greater extent than in the two earlier novels, w hich I think made for a stronger story.

This was a very fitting end to an amazing series. I couldn't have been more pleased with the way things ended. And while not everyone got a happy ending, the ending they had was, well...fitting.

Dred and Jael have definitely become one of my all-time favorite book couples.

This isn't really a proper review, but I don't think I could write a review that truly expresses how much I enjoyed not only this book, but the Dred Chronicles as a whole.

The best way to end a series. After all the crap that happened on Perdition, our heroes deserve some sweetness.

These people are great, this conclusion is great, the story as a whole is great, hell, even Vost's story thread was excellent. I'd definitely recommend this series, and I think this book is the best of them all.
