Lush, evocative, wistful and decadent; much like Fitzgerald's Gatsby, Waugh's novel concerns itself mostly with the distinctions of class and the status that cannot be bought.

Although a challenging book to get my teeth into at first, I was soon swept away by the intrigues and mysteries of the lives of the Flyte family. Combined with the masterful language and evocative imagery; this novel harkens back to a time where novels could progress. The eccentricities of Sebastian and the rest of his family, each one in disgrace for various reasons and yet as a unit still perpetually accepted by society, form the backbone of this concise epic, but it is so much more than that. It is a farewell to a society in decline (Waugh could not have possibly forseen the outburst of affection for the Golden Age of the Big House that continues to this day.), a eulogy to lost love and youth, but most importantly for me, it is a celebration of the sort of time where; "I’ve got a motor-car and a basket of strawberries and a bottle of Chateau Peyraguey", was as good an excuse as any...
