I keep flipping between two or three stars because really liked the start of this book. Really cool overview of history and what we do and don't know about early humans. I'd completely forgotten a new species of humans (homo luzonensis) was discovered in 2019. A few things were trying too hard to be cute about telling the history and the Cindy character enforcing 1950s housewife stereotypes grated on me, but overall I still enjoyed it.

But the further it got into the cognitive revolution stuff it stopped working for me, just didn't seem to flow as well and made a lot of leaps in conclusions without the recognition of those leaps that the earlier chapters had. And I found the whole "sapiens on trial" thing in the last part of the book to be an incredibly boring choice of framing device, especially since so much of it was just word bubbles in a courtroom. I haven't read the book this graphic novel is based on so I'm sure it's based on the original, but it didn't work here.

Overall I definitely recommend getting it from the library as it's an interesting read but I doubt I'd read it again.

This is the first graphic novel I have finished. Great job Yuval

History presented in a dynamic and engaging format - this was a very fun read. Looking forward to the next volume!

i really enjoyed this one. science is always changing and our understanding of history is continuously evolving with new discoveries, so the entire approach was fantastic. the set up in this graphic novel was insightful and engaging that didn’t feel like i was forcing myself to read at all.

would’ve been 5 stars if i didn’t feel like it was a bit drawn out, making a lot of the same conclusions of “we don’t know anything for certain and can only theorize” was a tad repetitive.

will definitely be adding the original novel to my permanent book shelves.

The history in this graphic book is illustrated in an entertaining and scientific manner. I enjoyed the way the author(s) presented evidence for and against theories of the development of homo sapiens & their effect on the environment. The illustrations were good and it was helpful to separate the chapters with different color schemes. There are pros & cons to having the same illustration style throughout a long book like this. For me, I would have preferred a little more variety.

Myślałam, że wersja graficzna zastąpi mi czytanie pełnej, ale teraz to nie wiem, bo w graficznej same truizmy, więc może tekstową warto, bo mądrzejsza?

Graphic novel really is the way to go with non-fiction. I also appreciated that the author could say “there’s no way to tell for sure” on some things.

Wowza I am obsessed with this book. I read the original book but let's not lie it's a LOT TO TAKE IN. This is way more easy to digest for my brain.
