Wow. I am in awe of Octavia Butler’s writing. What a brilliant mind. This book challenged my views on what it means to be human and good and how to make decisions. Just wow.

A book that I’m sore I will be thinking about the meaning and implications of for a long time. The earth is mostly dead and aliens have taken the few remaining survivors and plan to breed with them to make a new race and ‘save’ both species. So many questions of consent when one species is so much more advanced than the other. Also all of the mind binding world building in the science, language and ways of being dealt with in this book. I’m so excited to read the rest of this series.

I've always preferred fantasy to science fiction and picked up this book without knowing what I was getting into. To call it thought provoking, would be a disservice as it keeps you captivated introducing new ideas and presenting entirely alien and yet dissonantly relatable quandaries with every turn of the page. I can't pick up the second book in the trilogy just yet because I'm just a little bit afraid it won't live up to the standard the first has set and because I need a while to think through all it has left me with. What a gift this book is and what a talent this writer is.
