Never let it be said covers and promoting yourself on Twitter don’t work. This author, who I had never read until this book, posted the beautiful covers of this series and instantly had me putting a hold on the first book at my library. She’s an author I have had on my list of author’s I want to read, but this pushed me to get cracking on reading her stories.
Both Evie and Zach are wonderful characters. Especially Evie. She is just a kind, thoughtful, interesting person. Evie’s parents died when she was young so she was partly raised by her Grandmother, spending her teen years hanging out with Zach and his brothers on their family ranch since their grandmothers were best friends. Evie and Zach had a special bond, but Zach always tried to keep Evie at arms-length.
I generally enjoy an amnesia story, and this is no exception. Evie had to go back to her roots, to the ranch she hasn’t set foot on in 10 years. I’ll admit this had me nervous this would end up as a “city girl realizes she hates the city and wants to move to a small town for true love” story. Not to give too much away, but this resolves in a bit of a different and satisfying way.
As much as I loved the bond and connections this family (and chosen family) had, there were some things that didn’t flow well for me. The reason Zach and his brothers didn’t have a great relationship with their parents was very muddled and confusing until almost the end of the story. This was not a storyline issue where it had to be held back, it just didn’t unfold in an organic way.
The ease the author integrated diversity into her characters is wonderful. From sexual orientation to race, the author included many facets without it seeming like these were just boxes she was checking off in order to be seen as inclusive.
There were a lot of things to love about this story, enough that I will definitely be reading the next book in the series. When it comes to this couple, they were sweet together but didn’t have tons of spark. That’s okay sometimes, yet I was hoping for a bit more chemistry. It was there at times, but not consistent.
This was my first cowboy romance book and also the first book I have read by Rebekah Weatherspoon. I thought it was a charming romance and I devoured it in one day. The main characters Evie and Zach are so cute and likable, so are the rest of the Pleasant gang. We all need a second family like them to swoop in and lift us up at times of hardship and trouble. Zach’s grandma Leona, the matriarch of the family was another great character, it was so sweet how much she loved and genuinely cared for Evie. Very touching. Overall, this was a delightful second chances romance that kept me reading all day and I can’t wait for the rest of the trilogy to come out.
