This was a fast read. Story is about the aged assassin Ira Rath. Hired by local power-holders to take care of problems they face he does not care if he is killing men, women or children. He lives in a deep isolation and as a monk haunted by his family history, history of cold-blooded murderers that have nothing but mayhem in their blood since the ancient feud over sheep.

But when everyone hears that he is not so young anymore and when his son becomes the target of the local loan sharks everything changes. It is now man of (w)Rath family against the impossible odds.

Its a dark tale, all characters are deadly people with little or no scruples and ready for a an all-out war to the very annihilation of the other side. Ira's son and his fiancee are the the most positive characters but even the son shows predilection for crime and violence.

Its a tale of family trying to survive while being branded as eternally damned in very closed-off and religious part of US.

Art is good and what is most important consistent throughout the entire book.

If you are fan of straight up action story (say like "Banshee") you will enjoy this one.

Recommended.

This might be the sickest and most blackhearted of all of Aaron's books, though it is still sad and has pathos. It has a lot of that Warren Ellis or Garth Ennis styled ultraviolence, though it isn't played for humor. Unlike Kirkman though, his strong writing makes it work as more than shock value.

I think we can all see some of the big moments coming in certain issues but it works like a charm. The quality of the dialogue and the rural noir aesthetic are what initially drew me to Aaron with his work on Scalped (and now Southern Bastards) and his Punisher Max and Wolverine runs (which weren't rural, but still nailed that quality). As much as I love his Thor and Wolverine & The X-Men runs I couldn't help but grin when I saw him working in that mode again.

Further adventures of the terrifying side of the South by a Southerner, inspired by parts of his own family history. A hitman is hired by a local rich family to take out his own son who, desperate for cash and with a baby on the way, is hired by said local family man to shoot some horses. When a kid gets mixed up in the shitshow, the son refuses to shoot the kid and runs.

Not a happy tale, folks. Of course, I liked it.

This might have been the most violent graphic novel I've ever read. Great artwork too.

That was really fun! I'm a sucker for cursed families, and also a sucker for revenge. So, if you get both of them together, I'm probably going to have a darn good time.
