A confusing and agonisingly over-researched mystery with a quite unsatisfying ending. Rescued a bit by a relatively sweet and sincere romantic subplot. I'm not a reader that requires their protagonist to be likeable or good, but I do like to at least get a measure of their thoughts and feelings beyond dated "no homo" jokes and distasteful comments about women. Not for me.

OK, so I wasn't sure I was going to like this, my academic background is ancient Roman history im hard to please, but hot damn did it rope me in. A fun romp through ancient Rome solving murders and revealing conspiracies to overthrow the Emperor. If you like detective novels and ancient history, you'll like this. The length of the series and its sequel is quite daunting so not sure how I'm going to get through the whole thing.
Moderate: Xenophobia, War, Murder, and Slavery
