Excellent, one of my favourite books. Prescott lays out the tale with vivid details and I couldn't stop reading.

Although the historiography of this work can be problematic, and Prescott's descriptions of the native Mexicans comes across as racist to modern readers, this is still an entertaining read and is a solid work of military history.

Prescott was certainly a wonder to be able to research and write this book while legally blind in the 19th century. However, his writing style doesn't hold up in the 21st century, and it's hard to read his poetic musings without growing tired of his constant layer of sparkling gloss, spread thick not only on the humans involved, but of the actual process of domination, subjugation, and genocide of an entire human culture. To him, it's all a beautiful tragic poem which he was able to conjure because, essentially, his ancestors were the victors.
