I cried my whole way through this book. I related to Ellie in so many ways having also grown up as a fat little Jewish girl who ate her lunches in the library. I think what really broke me was when Ellie picked “Song for a Whale” to read for her English class since I’ve also just read that book (and I also highly recommend!). Ellie is such a brave and eloquent little girl and I wish I’d had that kind of chutzpah in me at her age.
Ellie’s growth throughout the book and finally being able to stand up and say how badly she was being hurt by doctors and her own mother was what I could have used as a kid. The way that mothers push diet culture on to their young daughters is something that needs to stop. There’s nothing wrong with being fat and it doesn’t mean you’re unhealthy. You can live your best and happy life as a fat person and anyone who says differently isn’t worth speaking to.
