This was a childhood book I had in my bookcase since forever. I know that I had read it but only remembered a couple of details about the story: a bowler hat, a taxi, kids running around and Emil. I couldn't recall anything from the plot so re-reading it as an adult was fun because as things happened I could remember some of the details but not all of it. It's really witty, fast paced and fun things keep happening in the plot and gets better and better until the last page. It makes me want to pick up more children's literature, especially those that are set in foreign countries.

This tiny book is a gem. I finished it in an hour or so and finished with a big smile. As many have observed, this is a children's book done perfectly. It is written from the perspective of the children and how they think and behave. There is no attempt in creating caricatures of the children, a trap to which a lot of adult writers of child fiction fall. The book is just plain fun and a honest look at the world through a child's eyes. Emil's relationship with his mother, particularly, is so warmly captured, exactly how a child feels. I closed by deeply wishing we could all dissolve into this beautiful innocent world forever, such a more beautiful world than ours. A must-read!

My rating is lower than it should be because it's, unfortunately, dated in its view of the legal system.

But those boys with vibrant personalities and fresh outlooks were so enjoyable. As was the tone and the simpler era and age. If only youth could be like that again.
