Sin palabras, es perfecto de pies a cabeza. Nunca pensé que fuese tan fácil de leer un libro de casi 700 páginas pero Mariana tiene ese poder. Es, hasta el momento, mi libro favorito de ella .𖥔 ݁ ˖
Tenía muchas expectativas, eso a veces es contraproducente. La parte de la infancia de Gaspar se me hizo larga y el final, por el contrario, me supo a poco. Lo que me gustó mucho fue el estilo en que está narrado, las referencias populares y el repaso a sucesos históricos del país que, por lo opresivo, nutren de terror cualquier novela. (Por momentos se pone más bien nostálgica y cuenta cosas que no suman).
Es un buen libro, sin dudas, quería ponerle 5, pero se quedó en 4.

The saying to drop a book if it doesn't hook you up in its first 100 pages is bullshit. The story feels excruciatingly slow at the start then it keeps getting faster. then faster. then faster.
You know what got me hooked? The. second. chapter. The Left Hand. HELLO!!! Etched into my nervous system!!!!! Holy fucking shit!!!
and the title drop? insane. Never felt so depressed.
Sadly felt bored at times but I appreciate the hell out of this story for introducing me to Argentina's myths and culture. Enjoyed my first ever horror read. What a horrifying journey!

Es irónico que lo primero que me deja este libro es una sensación de sutileza, porque la prosa de Enríquez es cruda, directa, sin amagues ni condescendencias, pero se lee como millones de imperceptibles agujas que inyectan un veneno mortal. Irónico también que una novela de más de seiscientas páginas me deje un gusto a que cada palabra está ahí por una razón, sin artilugios ni grandilocuencias, con una expandida honestidad. Lo que más me impresionó como lector es que nunca sentí que fuera parte de una novela de terror, que en términos prácticos lo es, pero Enríquez logra mantener un equilibrio finísimo para condensar una variedad de géneros impensados, que en la previa sonaría a la fórmula perfecta para el desastre, pero que la autora logra manejar en forma impecable. Es una historia dura, durísima, sin matices, alejada por completo de la balanza moral que el género literario impone, con un hermoso recurso de ver los personajes desde otros personajes, con toda la crudeza de la humanidad, la fe y el poder. Una historia muy redonda, que más que cerrarse, converge en un final que tan sólo es uno entre los muchos posibles, porque lo hermoso de este libro no está en la clausura sino en el permanente desarrollo. Enríquez se la jugó por completo en un libro difícil, no sólo por lo extenso sino por los riesgos que abordó, al combinar una realidad dolorosa, palpable y presente, con una fantasía igual de cruda y real, que nunca se siente forzada, y que provoca terror precisamente por lo real y cercana. Mi sensación es que la autora logra salir victoriosa de un enorme reto.

The slowness of this burn was difficult at times. I’d complain about it a lot to whoever would listen. But every time I was starting to feel myself struggling to continue, it would pull me back in. The horrors were so detailed and devastating. I don’t think I’ll ever want to read it again, but damn.
