End Game by David Baldacci

There was nothing terribly exciting about this book. Definitely not one of Baldacci's best. The End Game that shows up at the End of the book was actually the least entertaining. The mystery (and the romantic tension) leading up to the End Game was the most intriguing and the reason I was kept engaged in the book. Baldacci is a gifted writer and I certainly won't stop reading his books. But, this one won't be remembered.

Endgame: the 5th book in the Will Robie series and honestly only one word describes it for me and it is disappointing. This was started in 2023 but dropped it as I found it sluggish and boring. The drama between Reel and Robie was out of left field and the love story was not my favourite and I love romance subplots. Took me about 300 pages to get somewhere. I will say the plot twists at the end made this a 3 star instead of a 1.

This was a better outing than the last book but, for the life of me, I don't understand why Mr. Baldacci insists on keeping Robie and Reel stateside. They're CIA snipers for crying out loud. The book starts with them on individual, overseas missions. Write books about those! Anyway, in this book we once again have Robie and Reel dispatched to do basic investigation type work. This time it's because Blue Man - the only high-placed person at the CIA who has a code name even though everyone knows his real man - has gone missing while visiting his hometown. Once there, our sniper duo encounters neo-Nazis, a religious cult, and millionaire doomsday preppers. And there's the usual body count.

There was also some personal angst going on between Robie and Reel. I've seen some reviewers complain about it but, personally, I welcomed it. It helps to humanize both characters a little. I know that they're super good at killing people and compartmentalizing what they do. What I want to see is who they are underneath their armor. There are feelings brewing between the two but while Robie wants to explore them, Reel's instinct is to pull away. This somehow leads to Robie making two extremely poor decisions. I'm quite disappointed in him, to be honest. I could maybe understand the first one...maybe. But the second one? Nope, not happening. And given that this looks to be the final Robie and Reel book, I'm even more disappointed that time was wasted on Robie's lapses in judgement. His relationship with Reel deserved better.

A non stop romp! Robie and Reel are some of my favorites these days and End Game was a great vehicle for them.
