I've read lots of zombie books, and this one is different from most in that it takes place long after the living dead have taken over (most of the ones I've read describe the initial outbreak of zombies). I liked seeing the perspective of someone who has grown up in a world where zombies are the norm. The first half of the story seemed slow to me, but the second half picked up the pace and I really got into it. The story has a whole struck me as a social commentary about what makes us human and what a "monster" really is, but there is still plenty of action (at least at the end) to keep fans of typical zombie lit happy. The ending was somewhat predictable and was too drawn out for me. I hate that "instead of just killing you I'm going to tell you all the reasons why I am evil first" thing that the bad guys do in some movies and books, and there's some of that here. However, there is one part of the ending that took me by surprise and made me happy. I think the author does a good job of wrapping things up while leaving plenty of room for the next book in the series, which I look forward to.

This book has its boringness but the more you read the better the book gets. I got in trouble for in reading in math class. This book is so darn good. If you like zombies and family issues read this book.

I usually don't do zombies, but a friend of mine had read this ans said it was good, and she doesn't like zombies much either. So I finally decided to read it, and I was floored. This isn't like any zombie book I've heard about. It's extremely philosophical, and really makes you question a lot of things. I love that it made me think about a lot of topics that I normally didn't even consider before. I like how the reason behind the zombies isn't explained, that the characters themselves don't know why it happens. It makes the story more interesting and less cliche. I just loved the storyline and the characters. It was very real, and almost plausible.

Zombie fun and games, but the games aren't fun. Excellent zombie tale of truths, lies, mistakes, abuse, control and revenge. There are some men that are just evil, and they aren't zombies.
The dead have control of the world. The living are living in fear, hidden behind walls, willing to just exist to be safe. The past has forever scared them. The new generation, the ones they didn't live through the first night of the zombie rising are itching to know what's out there, or at least the truth of what happened. When a town bully turns deadly, events drive the, out beyond and what they find there will bring on many more questions.
I really enjoyed this zombie tale. It wasn't as gore centered as a few of my other zombie reads are. I don't really notice the characters were so well developed.- Now waiting on book 2

Phew...finally finished this.

I can honestly say that I was scared to read this book, just look at the cover! I didn't think I would like this book because I read another zombie book before this and it was kind of gory but this was not your typical zombie book. This book made zombies or "zoms" more like real people even though they are dead.

The scary thing about this book because it makes you think that maybe this could happen. I hope something like this won't be you never know. Living in a society were you have to get a job when you turn 15 because you won't have any food rashions, that's pretty hard core. I'm not even sure what job I would want to do, not a lot of good options if you ask me.

I liked Benny. When him and Tom were together, they cracked me up. When Benny starts to swear, Tom will say "LANGUAGE"...so funny! They sound like more like a mom and son than brothers.

Some of the events were a tad predictable but I think that helps kids with predicting and wanting to read on. This book had enough actions were it was spaced out throughout the book and kept it exciting.

I think a lot of boys will enjoy this but maybe some might be turned away because of the size. I too thought it was a little to long but then again, the 1st book in a series sometimes has to be the longest with all of the background information.

Fans of World War Z will love this book. Maberry returns humanity to zombies in this fast-paced, well-written adventure. Maberry makes zombies a little less scary and reminds us the real monsters are the killers who can think and choose to kill. But at its core, it's the story of two brothers who slowly come to understand and respect one another.
