This book completely catapulted me back to the paranormal investigation I participated in of the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. Before we set off for the night, we were given a tour of the building, complete with an in-depth commentary on its history. The fact that women and children could be dropped off, discarded by their husbands who no longer wished to care for them, is completely mind-boggling. Husbands could simply state that their wives were crazy or afflicted with some other made-up, asinine ailment and be rid of them for good. These women and children lived only a few floors below brutal criminals, separated by flights of stairs and primitive security doors.

I’ve totally digressed, but this story shines a light on these same themes and circumstances. It was, at times, infuriating to read, but is brilliant all the same. A five-star read for me!

This book PISSED me off in all the right ways. The religious abuse, the manipulation, the treatment of the main character. I wanted to punch people in the face. I loved it.

Wow. I can’t remember the last time a book had me in a hold like this one. The minute I put the book down, all I could think about was the next time I’d be able to pick it back up!

An eye-opening story set in the 1950’s about Loretta, a suburban housewife and mother of two in a complicated marriage who discovers that she has abilities to communicate with the dead. Her gift is deemed to be the devils work. However, she feels compelled to use it to help solve the murder of a young girl in her small town, and bring justice to others while dealing with a controlling and abusive marriage.

Loretta absolutely won my heart, she was strong, passionate, and put others above herself in a time where women were questioned, challenged, and ultimately punished for having a voice. I cannot wait to read more of Kennedy’s work - this story was well written and thoughtfully researched.
