Is this book my new obsession? Yes. Yes, it is.
đź“–: In 1950s suburbia, homemaker Loretta Davenport is bewildered when she starts experiencing visions. Against Mr. Davenports will, Loretta visits a local psychologist who is interested in parapsychology (clairvoyance, telepathy, etc.). While she believes these visions may help find a local missing woman, her ultra-religious husband believes she may be possessed. In order to seek justice for others, she must first fight for herself.
🤝: This may be a good fit if you enjoy:
- found family & relationships to root for
- journeys of self-discovery
- female rage
đź’: I'm thankful for my Bookstagram community for keeping this one on my radar. It checked so many of my five-star-feeling boxes: female rage, friendship, clairvoyance, not wanting the book to end... If you think we have similar taste, I highly recommend giving this one a try!
I was nervous to pick this one up. I looove raging against the patriarchy and other sanctimonious institutions, but the label of horror makes me wonder if it will work for me. Sometimes horror can be too abstract for my Type A brain and goes over my head. Have no fear, Kennedy's writing is very straight forward.
💬: "Places of learning were her favorite kind of church—made sacred by the knowledge within their walls."
"This was a woman’s house, with womanly things, and inside it, Loretta felt safe."
RATING: I loved it! (5)

I really enjoyed this book & this main character. As a woman, I can’t imagine being in her situation. As a mom, it hurt my heart.
I loved the true crime, fantasy, mystery, realistic fiction vibes all coming together perfectly. Religious trauma? Can relate.

Gothic novels are a little outside my normal historical fare, but I couldn't put this one down. It read just like a movie (film rights, anyone?), and the twists and turns and setting and character development were perfection.

I didn’t quite know what to expect going into this book. Hoping it wouldn’t be overhyped but I absolutely enjoyed the flow of the story - talk about a roller coaster ride! And the ending - I love when all things tie together nicely in the end! So this story had everything I needed for a 5 star review!
