I was disappointed to learn her powers are just a side plot that has nothing to do with the actual topic, which is domestic violence in the mid 20th century in USA.

I was so excited to read this. At first I thought the narrator was the issue, making the character sounding like a whiny Mary Sue, but the narrator honestly is what made me even finish this book. So much squandered potential. All the amazing women who pitch in to help Loretta and new female friends she makes (both Alice and dead) at a time where women were oppressed and didn’t have help and faced the dangers of systemic misogyny, it was uplifting every time she bonded Gladys, Barbara, Viera, even the spirits that visit her. Unfortunately all that doesn’t matter because instead of continuing the power of female friendships or even the dynamics of her talents and communications with spirits Loretta only talks about her doctor’s soft voice and sexy hands or whatever. Completely ruined the story and squandered all potential. I was so disappointed. Two stars for the first half or so of the book.
