This feminist Gothic fiction book is a good insight and homage to the life of housewives back in the 1950's when they were submerged in the throes of domesticoty and monotony. We follow the life of Loretta Davenport as she discovers psychic abilities that lead her to discover a series of events that took place for the murder of young women in her town. Her husband is a devout Catholic figure in the neighborhood and an abusive husband at home. As a women with no rights during this period, the reader is entrenched by how determined Loretta is while trying to leave her spouse, save and keep her children, solve murder, and become independent through all of it in a time where women were not looked after.
The story has a medium pace and good character development. The reason why its not rated higher is because the plot twist was predictable and the resolution to the main conflict was solved in less than a full chapter after being built up throughout the second half of the book. Definitely left me wanting more and not believing that the conflict had truly resolved. I spent that whole chapter saying "wait really? Thats it?"
Other than that, it was a quick and easy read with an entertaining plot and a main female character you just HAVE to root for. Not to mention, the subtle mentions and implications of the queen relationships in the story definitely boost up my ranking by at least a quarter of a star!!
