i did not like the book as much as i hoped i would. i was surprised to hear that the movie came before the book, and in this rare case, i would recommend watching the movie and not bothering with the book at all.

it wasn't terrible, but i didn't take anything new away from it. the story itself is compelling and tackles some heavy and important subjects such as rebellion against conformity, learning to think for oneself, and following dreams one's and passions, but the execution of it in the book lacked so much. the pacing was very fast. the writing wasn't necessarily bad, but also not really descriptive enough. the boys are not that easily distinguishable, have barely any depth to their personalities. everything feels rather vapid. there's not much relationship building going on. everything felt very rash and not well-established. more insights into the thoughts and feelings would've made everything so much more relatable. at least it was short.

on one side note: the scenes with knox gave me tons of secondhand embarrassment, and i hated that.

tldr: great story, bad execution. the book is nothing special. reading it felt like what watching the movie adaptation of a book is often like, just the other way around this time.

The movie was certainly better.
Better thought out and with scenes that really hit. I still got some enjoyment out of reading this book, but the movie was just so much more emotional. The characters more loveable.

And there were some weird scenes written in here to be honest. Like the part with Knox and Chris and the scene where Keating shows questionable photos to some teenage boys. The movie came first and had some great scenes that weren't put in the book but they added these weird and uncomfortable ones??? Like, just no.

This book was based on the film, which I loved.
However it wasn't well written, I only felt the emotions when I remembered how it looked like in the film.
When I saw Neil smile, I thought that his smile lit up the whole room etc., but in the book it just said he smiled. The chemistry between the characters was missing too.
It should have been way longer, telling us details and everything.
And to add, some if my favourite scenes were missing, like what?
