Love the cover of this book! I really enjoyed this retelling although I’m not a big fan of spice but I really appreciated the trigger warnings. There was enough plot vs spice scenes to keep the story moving and interesting.

4/5🌶️, KU, total standalone but part of a series, medieval fantasy, shadow-wielding, dark magic, fae king MMC, warrior, tough, mistreated and mistaken identity, actually a princess FMC, kidnapping, lots of magic use, gentle femdom and “good boy” sexy times

I grabbed this book because I’m always after a powerful woman making powerful men come to their knees, and this book delivered on that account. I appreciate how the villainous MMC was submissive and had a praise kink, but also liked how he could flip and be dominant when the FMC demanded it. I also enjoy a realms on horseback (only one horse), fighting magical forces and building bonds with the knights protecting the King and his captive. However, I found myself growing bored of the story a few times. It took me forever to finish it (well, longer than normal) and I felt there was the beginnings of a great story but it didn’t have the pizzazz. Things happened in lightning speed, the hate-to-love happened in hours not weeks, the infatuation to sacrificing all for love happened in days and there literally could have been a paragraph or two about how the journey from one side of the realm to the other took weeks, instead of days. There was a lot to like about this book, but it could have been 100pgs more and been amazing. I’ll definitely give the author another read though.

I received an ARC of this book and as soon as I was done with Book 1 in this series, I jumped right on into this one. Rebecca Kenney does not play! She is so great at creating these fantasy worlds with characters you love or hate or just love to hate. These characters in The Maleficent Faerie are very flawed and you want to root for them the entire time. I cannot wait to read more from this author!

I read this in episodes on Kindle Vella before it was released as a book. I love these two characters. Malec is such an interesting character. Although a villain, we can see his dedication and protect of his people. The spice between these two is

Fun take on this particular fairy tale. Gender bent adaptation of Sleeping Beauty. The MMC casts a curse on the infant human princess in anger when her parents won’t agree to his request to test a theory to save the realm. He moves to abduct the princess as she nears her birthday but soon discovers he captures her bodyguard instead.

What comes is a story of guilt and regret with revelations of lies and betrayal. Not everything is as it seems in this realm where two kingdoms occupying the same realm
are at war over how to worship their goddess.

The MMC is a bit of a switch with Jareth (The Labyrinth) and Loki (films) vibes. He doesn’t expect to fall for this woman he has captured and while he fervently believes he can solve the riddle of their dying realm, he becomes unsure if he can go through with it. There’s a really great plot twist and a little revenge that’s deliciously sweet.

My biggest complaint in the writing is the author taking too much time to explain a particular detail in the midst of action. It took me out of the story every time.
