I enjoyed this a lot! Definitely one of the better sleeping beauty retelling I've read. It had a nice balance of spice to plot and I enjoyed the characters dynamic.
It was especially refreshing to have a mald take on the submissive role and it was done so well.
I do think some of this could have been edited down and some scenes were unless but still a great standalone fantasy romance.

Looooved it!!!

Seriously, I may like Malec more than I liked Zoltan (in the Sea Witch).
This is stand alone, and you do not need to have read the previous book in the series to enjoy this one.
Sleeping Beauty was never my favorite fairy tale, but all the twists and turns and surprises kept me entertained. Aura is just the right amount of spunk, and with everything that happens she doesn't lose that edge even when things could easily drag her down for good.
Like The Sea Witch, the world building is excellent (and absolutely fascinating!) and there are plenty reminders that you should always be open to learning new things instead of being blinded by what everyone always tells you is right.

Rebecca Kenney is a comfort read for me at this point: so amazingly reliable, and I know I'm going to have a good time with the book.

This is, admittedly, not my most favorite fairytale in existence, but I really loved the gender-swapped Maleficient, including the more submissive tendencies during the spicy scenes. Kenney continues to write strong female characters which I really enjoy, as well as provides very casual queer representation in the story. (There is a character who uses they/them pronouns, and no big deal is made of it by anyone, it just is. Great!)

A fun, one-day read that was a nice, predictable palette cleanser between all the books from new-to-me authors I have in my TBR pile.

I was actually kind of sad when the plot twist was revealed, but that’s fine. Though, I don’t understand fully how the evil king had four horns.

“Think twice before you attack, viper.”
“Stop calling me that,” I spit.

I've read a few of Rebecca F Kenney's works and they never cease to amaze me.

The way this author can world build? Amazing. But it never takes away from the story telling, which is something I'm always concerned about in more fantasy leaning books.

This one tells the story we may all be familiar with, but in it's own Villian gets the girl way.

Maleficent is a man, he is the Maleficent one known as Malek. He's dark, broody, but also has a completely different side to him once you get to know him in this book. Not every dark cover is as bad as it seems...

Aurora, or Aura, is the body guard to the princess. She's fae, but she's an odd fae. Nothing quite seems right with her, but as long as she can protect the princess - that's all she's concerned about.

“Sometimes I need to be reminded,” he murmurs.
“Reminded of what?” I whisper.
“That I am enough. Even when I’m not.”

This book touched my heart.

It deals with:

- Mental Health Rep
- Enemies to Lovers
- Fae
- Kind of fated/soul mates ish?
- World Building
- Retelling of The Sleeping Beauty (spindle and all)
- Age Gap, but not as far as you'd think.
- BDSM/FemDom

And the spice, don't forget the spice.

“I hate you for making me crave your admiration, your touch, your glance,” he says, low.
“I hate how my fucking body turns traitor in your presence. I hate the way I’m ravenous for your soft skin, your strength, your passion—I want it enveloping me, swallowing me whole. I hate you because you remind me of my own arrogance and idiocy, of the failings that drove me to speak the curse. I could have found another way, a better way. I was a fool.”

I loved this story! Malec and Aura are wonderful characters that you want to cheer for. We love an emo king and a fierce female lead.
