I had never read this one before. I can see why some people don't like it (different tone, published after Rose's death w/out Laura's permission, it's pretty depressing, etc) but still, I think it's an important and more realistic look at her life. There were some strange moments (WTF Mr Boast!) and even a sort of reference to sex which caught me off guard. I'm glad I read it, but if you want to only read the romanticized Little House books, then skip this one.
It's too bad Laura never saw this one through to publication. I would have liked to see a final draft instead of the first one, but it is interesting to see what she wrote before revisions, editing and rewriting turned her books into the classics they were.

I don't really associate this book with the rest of the "Little House" series for several reasons. First of all, it was published without the consent of Laura Ingalls Wilder or her daughter (and editor) Rose Wilder Lane. Second, it was only found after Rose's death, and for whatever reason, it was never finished. And lastly, it seems to lack the innocence and charm of the other books (perhaps because it was written without the help of Rose, or that it was simply meant for a more mature audience).
Still, it's an interesting and heartbreaking account of the first four years of Laura's marriage to Almanzo Wilder.

One of my favorite series as a kid! For a year I was even signed up with scholastic where I received the whole series in paperback and got to do little fun crafts and things. :) I've watched COUNTLESS episodes with my mother and had fun comparing the books to the show. This series will always hold a special place in my heart.

This was a draft of a book found by Laura's daughter after her death. It was very different in terms of style and wasn't nearly as descriptive as the other books. I ended up ordering some other books Laura wrote about her life after this book from the library today...
