The writing is slightly off, stilled- likely due to translation. It’s an okay look at an abusive relationship, the slow degradation of boundaries and slow acceptance. The guy was bad news off the bat and Lilja is a bit of a jerk (doesn’t mean she deserves it obviously). Ending was a bit abrupt, didn’t resolve anything but it’s meant to make reader decide what happened for themselves.

Not quite sure how I felt about this book, but it only took me an hour to read it so not much time was spent on it. Overall, it just made me sad and the ending kind of sadder.

This book was like a freight train and felt very real to me in a way that made me uncomfortable but also seen.

TW: self harm!

I really loved this book. It’s sad and poetic. At times Lilja’s story really resonated with me. Those feelings of trying so hard to make yourself into someone your partner wants. The gaslighting. The depression. 

The writing really is exquisite. I can’t wait to read more from this author. 

My only complaint is the ending felt too abrupt. I wanted a couple more sections to find out more about Lilja. Does she’s stay with her terrible not boyfriend??? Does she flee??? I need to know.
