A tragedy needs a certain inevitability to really land, I think. The feeling that characters are careening towards a disaster borne of their own making. This isn't a perfect rule, there's sad stories that emerge from how a character cannot escape the decisions the universe is making for them. But I think an ending that emerges from "there's nothing you can do to stop this" needs a certain kind of groundwork. This book's groundwork seems to be pushing towards a tragedy born from the character's own flaws. But the finale instead relies on the crux of the former.

Overall needed to be edited down. The framing device of Harper's perspective adds theoretical fun tension, but removing that plotline might make for a better story. Willow is just much more compelling as a protagonist and its a strange choice to put a layer of distance between her and the audience. Focusing on her storyline and the self-contained island vignettes would just make a tighter book overall.

Its a debut novel, with all its little successes and flaws.

I’d give this 6 stars if I could. This story was an absolutely gripping and unique thriller about a man who goes to look for his sister on an island full of secrets, where the people strangely seem set on repeating the same day in 1994 over and over again eventhough it’s modern times. It felt like an adult Goosebumps story. It was creepy, emotionally, adventurous and truly addictive. I can’t wait to read this author’s next book!

This book is the reason I switched from mystery to horror: it sets up an eerie, dread-inducing vibe that implies a great evil, and then it follows through and delivers a climactic ending with an unspeakable horror. I was left very satisfied.
