I was super invested in this in the beginning but I think I wanted more out of it. I think the societal commentary was great but I wish it wasn’t all wrapped up in the last chapter and that we knew more about the outside world.

2.5 ☆ I loved the idea of this book but literally nothing happened till around 60% in? Also I didn’t really connect to a single one of these characters, they were a bit mysterious but like a bit boring.
A lot said it was like a dark love island which I kind of get but there was literally no relationships so was a bit of a let down overall unfortunately.

I read this in two days, I was absolutely hooked. Was it the writing or the story or the fact that I could see this very situation playing out irl? The world burns but we still watch reality tv. And what do we do if we get everything we want but have to give up our humanity for it? I genuinely enjoyed every moment of this. I'm sure others have criticisms and they're probably valid but I thought this book was really great.

While I was reading this I kept thinking it cute and would be great for anyone (like myself) who is wrapped up in the reality TV world, specifically Love Island. I did wish that I had any idea what was going on "outside". They talk about war but don't give any real indicator of what is happening. At times this annoyed me but I suppose it contributes to the whole "removed from reality" theme.
Having now finished this I can't stop thinking about what it says about our obsession with a false reality and concern over how people see us, as well as consumerism in general. So maybe this book will stick with me more than I originally thought.
