Love how this book played on the reality tv element, but imagined it an even bleaker future where climate change, war, and economic insecurity set the stakes of reality tv even higher

It felt like there was a lot of potential to be more but it never really got there. In the first part of the book, the pace felt very slow. The epigraph was pointless and gave no insight. It felt like in every chapter it was going to build up to something but in the end it was very anticlimactic. The main girl, Lily was very annoying to me. I would’ve loved to get more insight into other characters or just different perspectives, in general. I ended this book thinking what did I spend my time listening and reading for. Waste of time.

Started off really, was excited to get into a dark perspective on reality tv but it was lackluster and I expected a bit more drama or dare I say thrill. Maybe I’m crazy but after all the tense lead ups the plot always ended on a flat note.

Lately I’ve been reading books about desperate people, and what they’ll do to get what they want - usually money. I reread The Hunger Games series this summer, and The Compound has a similar vibe - twenty desperate people in an enclosed area called the compound, fighting to be the last one, everything filmed for public consumption. While The Hunger Games is YA and dark, this is an adult novel, dark and grim, but also a satirical portrayal of reality television. One minute, contestants are applying their makeup and doing cannonballs into the pool; the next, they are doing tasks like insult one another for rewards and banishing others from the compound. The book is set during a seemingly dystopian world: there’s mention of a war, perhaps some climate change. Everything about the compound is so vapid and shallow, but I have to ask myself if I would act any differently, given their situation? This was an easy binge read, but when you go deeper, it’s yet another way to examine consumerism and the social mores we hold to and what it might take for it all to fall apart.

Main character was difficult to root for- not that she was unlikeable. The concept of the book was great but left a lot of unanswered questions about several characters. Would have preferred the main character to be Becca.
