People were LAMBASTING this book on tiktok so I was expecting worse but besides the constant argument about the concept of rainbows, which annoyed me to no end, I liked this book a lot. The ending is definitely a real standout, and I’m really excited for what this kind of meditation on marriage in LGBTQ+ romance means for the genre (if this book has an impact on the genre, which God I hope it does.)

“I am yours, more truly than I have ever been anyone’s. Because when I’m with you, I’m me. Not someone I think I should be. And I’ll be with you, however you want, for as long as you’ll have me.”

So, I really liked Boyfriend Material. It was a cute rom-com. And because I liked it, I decided to read Husband Material, which continues the story of Luc and Oliver. And I liked it. It's another cute rom-com. However, I didn't like it as much as the first book.

What won me over Boyfriend Material, was the character development. Although I didn't like Luc at first, I kept rooting for him and Oliver. And, with time, I started to like him. But when I started reading this book, I already know Luc and his character development. And, although this book also has strong character development, it wasn't as impactful as the character development of the first book. So, the book ended up falling a bit short, for me. However, on a positive point, this book was able to surprise me since some plot twists were completely unexpected.

Overall, this is a cute rom-com that I would recommend to fans of Luc and Oliver.

"And for a moment, just for a moment, I half wished this was our first date again. I mean, not literally because it had been a disaster. But I wanted to keep this. This almost fragile feeling of everything being what it was and being for its own sake and not needing to go anywhere or become anything else.
But that was how relationships began. It wasn’t how they lasted."

I enjoyed Boyfriend Material, but felt frustrated by the rushed ending, and so I loved getting to experience these characters again and to see how things have developed for them. I still didn't totally love the ending of this one, because it again felt slightly rushed and clunkily-done, but I appreciated the overall message and came away feeling much more satisfied than I did at the end of the first book.

This book is a great combination of lighthearted and serious, with so many laugh-out-loud moments and equally as many important conversations. There's a brilliant cast of characters, and I particularly liked that the two James' felt much more distinct in this book.

I don't usually enjoy sequels more than their predecessors, so kudos to Alexis Hall for doing such a good job with this one!

liked the book, not as much as the first one but still incredibly sweet and really funny. also i did actually enjoy most of the outcalling of heteronormativity, homophobia, sexism and especially amatonormativity and the misplaced importance of marriage.

Thank you to Netgallery and Sourcebooks for an arc for a honest review.

What a disappointment. Since Husband Material is two years after Boyfriend Material, I would assume that the MC's would have gone through AT LEAST SOME growth?? Yet, they're STILL arguing over the same shit, yet on a bigger scale. The way Luc asks Oliver to marry him? The way that all the plot devices seemed to just shove along the two, and get them to the altar AND THEN THE ENDING?

You gotta be fucking kidding me. This book was SUCH a disappointment - and in my own opinion, it seemed to be just a money grab. The publisher and the author knows it would sell well, even if the content wasn't even great. I will be returning my copy.
