ugh I wanted to love this so so bad and was really rooting for it, but unfortunately it fell a bit flat. I loved the first half, but the second half really slowed down and left me wondering how we strayed so far away from what I was expecting. I really loved the characters and the relationship that formed between Tokue and Sentaro. Also despite the way the author went about it, I still liked the message that this book was making about finding meaning in a life filled with tragedy and hardship. I also found the historical aspects to be super interesting and was something I didn't know before reading.

I just really didn't enjoy the distance between Tokue and Sentaro in the second half.

I would still recommend this if your looking for a cozy, food heavy, quick read. Again I love all of the characters and loved watching their relationship form.
