There's a firm lack of focus in everything about this book. The author is so subtle and squeamish about sex and rape, even as concepts, that it made it difficult to understand any of the romantic storylines at all. This "passionate" romance Atalanta enters into becomes confusing in that way, because are they having sex? Is she directly defying Artemis? You don't learn it until the end. I think this stems from a larger issue: literally nothing is fleshed out. We barely know details about the boat and the living situation, there's no suspense or risk or intrigue in battle scenes, not enough characterization to sympathize with those who've died, there's no flirting between the two lovers. But we are told over and over about how strong and powerful Atalanta is. And also there's a million descriptions of forests. But then there's also like four different quests that happen. This book reads as listless and it just kept going even when I was begging for it to stop.
