A gripping novel that dives into the complex psychology of characters who commit crimes, those that love them, and those who try to catch them. All of this is told on the backdrop of 19th century Russia, an era defined by anxiety and anticipation of a great change (which would manifest as the murder of the Romanovs and the subsequent Bolshevik Revolution.) Dostoevsky weaves in social commentary on this period of Russia, and he continually touches on theories and thoughts that were popular at the time. This novel surprised me in so many ways, but specifically its redemptive aspects. While full of dark and cruel depictions, it was balanced by displays of love and a strange type of grace.
