this being my first reading of the year might say a lot about my current mental state... nevertheless a fun read love you dostoevsky <3
This was the first classical novel I've ever read, and I must say I'm genuinely impressed by Dostoyevsky. I was expecting a language as tricky to read as Nietzche because of its time, but it proved to be quite different. It's easily read, the author manages to make what is so difficult to speak about understandable. His knowledge of human psychology and his ability to imagine what a natural response would be is beyond genius. It's a reason Dostoyevsky is so loved even today.

It is honestly a fantastic look into what happens when you believe you are the exception. Although the text is unyielding and at times dated it really speaks to the view a lot of modern folks have regarding being above morality and how this is a dangerous philosophy to have in a community. Highly recommend

" But who are you? What prophet are you? From the heigh of what majestic calm do you proclaim these words of wisdom?"
I have finished Crime and Punishment after opening it months ago. When I first started this book, I read a good way through and then stopped, occasionally picking it up but never fully committing. Let me say this was not because I was uninterested, but time keep slipping from me. After a while, I decided to delve back into it, as soon as I did, I had regretted ever stopping for so long.
A philosophy professor I once had told me Dostoevsky is not literature you should let yourself become distracted while reading, it requires your full attention to digest and understand it. I plan to re-read and be far more attentive.
While reading this book I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the philosophical themes seamlessly paired with psychology. Raskolnikov was an amazingly, ill protagonist who falls victim to ideology. The characters were nuanced and thoughtful, which made the story all the more interesting and important to the main themes. I find that often I find myself caring far more for the protagonist's storyline m0re than anything else, but this was not the case in Crime and Punishment, I easily found myself engaged and sucked into every area of the book. Dostoevsky's writing was excellent, vivid and took on a life of its own. It was very apparent from reading the translators note, Dostoevsky's deep connection with his work. As I have read some of Notes from Underground, his own ideologies drive his work, notions of nihilism and the idea of the division of man.
Rodya battles with questions that are valid but goes as far as to test these inquires. He is reduced to a battle with himself, the ending was terribly melancholic (in the best way), as he turns to the very thing, he renounced to give himself hope, love. I will say that I never once viewed this book as a romance, although themes transpired, it never seems that central to me. Perhaps, that was me missing the mark. I was anticipating the ending more, but it was a realistic one, depicting a man with a thousand fates.
Overall, an amazing read that was thought-provoking and had many emotional aspects. I am glad I indulged myself into this read as I am very satisfied with my reaction and how it left me feeling. Can't wait to read more of Dostoevsky.
