أنا كنت من الناس اللي طول عمري بخاف من الكتب الكلاسيكية، خصوصًا الروايات الروسية. كنت دايمًا بشوفها تقيلة وكبيرة، والناس بتتكلم عنها وكأنها محتاجة شهادة دكتوراه عشان تفهمها. لكن قلت خليني أجرب مع "الجريمة والعقاب" بعد ما خلصت "الليالي البيضاء". الموضوع ما كانش سهل خالص في البداية.
أول ما مسكت الرواية وشفت حجمها (800 صفحة مقسومة على جزأين في الترجمة اللي عندي)، حسيت إني دخلت ورطة. الأسماء الروسية كمان! يا نهار أبيض، كل واحد عنده اسم طويل، وبعدين يجيبوا له تصغير، وبعدها لقب تاني، وأنت مش فاهم هو نفس الشخص ولا حد جديد. الموضوع كان مربك جدًا لدرجة إني كنت ساعات بقفل الكتاب وأقول: "هو أنا ليه بعمل كده في نفسي؟".
في الأول ما استمتعتش صراحة. كنت بقرأ وأنا زهقان، خصوصًا الحوارات الطويلة بين راسكولنيكوف ورازوميخين أو أي شخص تاني. ساعات كنت أتخطى صفحات كاملة لأني حاسس إني مش فاهم إيه اللي بيحصل أو مش مهتم بالكلام. لدرجة إني وقفت قراءة الرواية فترة طويلة، وقلت خلاص مش هرجع لها.
لكن اللي خلاني أرجع أكمل هو مشهد معين شدني جدًا: لما دخلت شخصية سيفلرجايد بيت روديون (راسكولنيكوف). هنا حسيت إن في حاجة بتتغير، وإن الأحداث بدأت تاخد شكل أعمق. رجعت للرواية، وكملت الجزء التاني بسرعة رهيبة – خلصته في يومين! وهنا بقى بدأت أشوف الرواية بشكل مختلف تمامًا.
الجزء التاني كان أمتع بكتير. حسيت إن الإيقاع أسرع، الأحداث أعمق، وفيه توتر يخليك مش قادر تسيب الكتاب. كمان بدأت أفهم شخصية راسكولنيكوف أكتر – مش مجرد شاب ارتكب جريمة والسلام، لكن واحد عايش في صراع رهيب بين عقله وضميره. وظهور سونيا خلاني أعيد التفكير في حاجات كتير، رمزيتها، إيمانها، وتناقضها مع سوداوية راسكولنيكوف. لقيت نفسي متأثر بيها جدًا.
الغريب إن الرواية قلبت معايا من "أنا زهقان ومش فاهم" لحد "أنا متعلّق بيها عاطفيًا". لدرجة إني بعد ما خلصتها، كل ما أسمع اسمها أو أشوف الغلاف بتاعها، بيرجعلي نفس الإحساس اللي حسّيته وقت القراءة: خليط بين الحزن، الفضول، والرهبة كده من اللي فات.
باختصار، "الجريمة والعقاب" مش رواية سهلة ولا مناسبة لأي حد عايز قراية خفيفة على القهوة. هي محتاجة صبر، محتاجة وقت، ومحتاجة إنك تستسلم لتفاصيلها وما تزهقش من البداية. بس لو عدّيت المرحلة دي، هتلاقي نفسك قدام عمل عظيم فعلًا، بيخليك تفكر في أسئلة كبيرة عن الجريمة، العقاب، والإنسان نفسه.
أنا عن نفسي، رغم البداية الصعبة، فرحان جدًا إني كملتها. وحاسس إني خدت تجربة مختلفة تمامًا عن أي كتاب قريته قبل كده.
Alright, first of all, I don't really feel capable of writing a "good" review for this one, because I am sure I missed some (if not a lot) of the messages and the historical context, so I am definitely in need of further studies and reviews to enhance my understanding of the book, but let me say this: I am really glad that it kept getting better and better and concluded with a profound ending, because I was so afraid that I wasn't going to like it, which I probably would have been crucified for, but it was just very slow-paced at first, and the first quarter or so of the book was not very appealing, other than the main plot line, aka the 'crime'. Oh, and also, I guess, surprisingly, for once, I am glad I haven't read this earlier at a younger age, because I certainly wouldn't have had enough mental capacity to appreciate it and probably would have even hated it wondering how such a book could get so popular and praised by so many! Ooof! :)
I guess this is the best advice I can give: Don't give up or don't get discouraged, and keep reading if you want to finish this classic, because it definitely gets better as you read through!

I'm not sure why it was a bit of a struggle for me to finish this personally, (blame it on the lengthy diagloues, maybe?) not because it was poorly written (it wasn't), or because the content was not engaging enough but I DO know that my heart was full after finishing it and now I am contemplating re-reading it one day.

Such a rewarding read. There are multifaceted lenses to analyse this book from, I felt that the ones I found most noticeable was the transformation of Sonia and ‘the woman question’ as well as the parallels between Raskolnikov and Svidrigailov. Amazing book!
