I haven’t read a historical fiction novel in a long while, but I have been reading plenty of books that have revenge as a theme. This book was able to cut into me because of Eve’s need for revenge. I was able to keep reading through slower bits in the hope that it would lead to a satisfying conclusion.

Spoiler:
Wasn’t happy at how much Charlie was involved in the final “battle,” but this Rose narrative was shoved down readers’ throats for 200+ pages so whatever.

3 stars, but I added 1 because it has taught me about these amazing and brave women!!!!

I read most of this book in France, which helped to bring some immediacy to the events. An excellent novel weaving both the first and Second World War through alternating perspectives.

Better than a 3, but not quite as good as a 4. It was a little slow going — not a page-turner for me — but I enjoyed it well enough. Tricky era to try to write a pseudo-feminist storyline for. I appreciate the attempt, but I know it wasn’t quite right because I was regularly pulled out of the story into my own critical thinking whenever I struck on one of the many women-are-tough-too moments that felt forced. Overall, kinda meh-ier than I hoped.

I found Eve's part of the book fascinating. It took me quite a book longer to get into Charlie's story, but once I did the book really gelled for me. This is a compelling look at a part of history that hasn't received the attention it deserves.
