A really mixed experience for me. I enjoyed some bits but it felt like something was missing in parts. Still made me cry

A devastating family story that includes of all places Hamilton! I enjoyed the plot/story and thought it was very well-written in that aspect, however I didn't really get the feeling like I was 'there' in many of the places. Mostly the writing isn't overly lyrical however this sentence stood out to me:

"Josephina can see the old woman she has become and the young woman she used to be, and both of them arrive at the same time, like a blessing, when Maude smiles at her."

I liked the section at the end when the family is together the most. It felt the most real.

Found in a little book shop in Hebden Bridge. I gasped at how perfect it sounded. It didn’t disappoint.

Set across Singapore, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and London, this is an intergenerational story of trauma, grief and revenge. Beautifully written, I was choking back tears on the tube, at the end. I only wish it was longer, so there was more space for characters development.

The last of my Books From Countries I Backpacked (a 2 for 1).
