Can books about Sri Lanka ever be happy?? Wonderful book with a heartbreaking story (or stories?) that gave insight into the Sri Lankan diaspora across the world. My main issue was the lack of speech marks but otherwise the writing was beautiful. At times it felt as though too much had been put in to the book/the characters lives but the author ended up making everything come together.

Found the multiple perspectives/time periods a bit confusing to begin with but as it settled in, really enjoyed the book. Was a lot harder hitting than I expected.

I thought I was going to really like this book and it was good for the first few chapters but I felt like as it ambled on I found myself uninvested in the characters. Even though we chart the lives of the characters in each of the 3 generations I don’t feel like we get much interiority from any of them. I don’t know… I didn’t hate it, but it was lacking. I wanted something with more depth - a deeper bite into their lives. I appreciated the story and how the generations run parallel yet succeed one another but honestly it all just fell a bit flat for me.
